84% of people trust online reviews as much as they would a personal recommendation.

Reviews can take you to the top, or they can pummel you. They are a public statement that will guide others in your community on whether to choose you or competition.

So how do you get reviews? You don’t want to ask customers to leave you a 5-star review; you want to nudge them to just leave a review. This is where you need to get off of the sideline and play some offense.


1. The Experience

The most passive way to get customers to review your business is to deliver an excellent or horrible experience. This is guaranteed to get you some reviews. If you give your customers an extreme experience, bad or good, eventually it will motivate someone to go online and speak on that experience.

2. Ask for them

Asking will greatly increase your changes. What is a travesty is most businesses do not ask. It’s a very cost-effective way for you to get an online recommendation that will live forever and be seen by thousands. And it only takes a few seconds…

You could say something like. “Mr. Smith I just want to thank you for trusting us with your business, if there is anything else you need please let us know, and we love it if you could leave feedback for us on Google, Facebook, or Yelp. According to research that will increase that alone will increase your chances by a lot. Obviously, if you just had a heated argument with the customer you don’t want to ask for a review.

3. Leave Something Behind

One of my favorite tactics is to leave a gift. It could be in the form of a nice branded mug with a card thanking them for their business and asking for online feedback with instruction. This works on many levels. It is a tangible reminder for them, and it works on the law of reciprocity that states they will feel a slight obligation to your request.

4. Incentive Plan

This works on the employee level. You have a system in place where you reward employees who get positive online feedback. This has the potential to create a culture of good service for your customers from your employees. You need to be mindful that they are not asking for good reviews from customers to get the incentive.
